The first in a series of five readers, this volume is on an advanced-elementary/lower-intermediate level and assumes a knowledge of basic arabic as covered in ferguson and ani's "lessons in contemporary arabic, 1-8," center for applied linguistics, washington, d.c., 1960. the 20 lessons (1-15 are news reports and 16-20 are prose selections) are implemented with classroom exercises and drills and designed to introduce the student to the language of the modern arabic press. A special feature is the inclusion of preparatory sentences which precede the lesson material, introducing new vocabulary in contextual sentences resembling those in the actual readings. Gulf Arab is the term used to refer to a number of related dialects which are spoken along the Gulf littoral from northern Kuwait to Oman in the south-eastern corner of the Arabian peninsula. The people who live in this area are linked to each other by trading and seafaring traditions which go back many centuries, as well as by the complex tribal structure of Arabia. With the development of education since the second world war, and increasingly close social, political and developmental ties between Gulf states, a form of dialectal Arabic has evolved which is not closely associated with any one particular state, and which exhibits features common to them all. This is still unmistakably 'Gulf' in its basic pronunciation and morphology, as well as in its basic lexical stock, but its syntax and to some extent lexicon have been influenced by standard Arabic and other Arabic dialects. This provides a description of this educated, pan-Gulf dialect, based on many hundreds of hours of tape-recordings of natural conversation made in a variety of locations in the Gulf.

This book is a godsend for intermediate students. It features authentic texts from Arabic newspapers in clear font, translations into English in the back and a friendly, cheery ending. I only wish it had been available when I started reading Arabic newspapers. It can save you a year or two of painful dictionary work if you read through it carefully.
Big minus -- the texts are all from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some are funny, but some are deadly boring. Surely this is a matter of taste, but still...
